August signals the arrival of National Black Business Month, a dedicated time to honor and support Black-owned businesses across the country. This occasion is not only a recognition of the significant contributions that Black entrepreneurs make to our economy but also an acknowledgment of the unique challenges they face. At Neighborhood Community Development Fund (NCDF), we are committed to uplifting these businesses and fostering a community of growth and success.

How It All Began
National Black Business Month was established in 2004 by Frederick E. Jordan and John William Templeton. The aim was to highlight the importance of Black-owned businesses and to advocate for policies that support their growth. Black-owned businesses play a crucial role in the American economy, representing approximately 10% of all businesses in the country and significantly contributing to job creation and community development, particularly in underserved areas.

Despite their importance, Black-owned businesses often face systemic barriers, including limited access to capital and resources. Events like National Black Business Month are essential to bring these issues to the forefront and inspire actions that promote equity and inclusion.

Our Support
Here at NCDF, we pride ourselves on being a supportive partner for Black-owned businesses. Over the years, we have assisted numerous entrepreneurs in overcoming financial barriers and achieving their dreams. Below are just a few of these inspiring success stories throughout Allegheny County:

  • KSC Commercial Cleaning Service
Karen Denton faced immense personal and professional challenges before establishing her KSC Commercial Cleaning Service. With our support, she secured the necessary financing to purchase her own office space in Wilkinsburg.
  • Strong Funeral Home
The loss of her daughter motivated Arlena Strong to provide compassionate services to grieving families. Strong’s dream of owning a funeral home became a reality with a little boost from us.
  • Cuddy’s
Cousins Charles and Reggie Nelson combined their culinary expertise and business acumen to establish Cuddy’s, a Southern comfort food restaurant. Initially operating in a rented facility, the duo sought our help to expand their business.

A Yearlong Commitment
Our commitment to supporting Black-owned businesses extends beyond just August. We will continue to provide the resources, guidance and financial assistance necessary for these businesses to thrive. We encourage our communities to join us in this effort by patronizing Black-owned businesses, spreading the word about their services and advocating for policies that promote economic equity.

Happy National Black Business Month!
